About North American Camping Report (NACR)

“In 2021, camping accounted for 50% of all leisure trips taken with more than half of travelers (53%) including camping in some or all of their travel.”

In a time of uncertainty across countries and industries, more people than ever identify as campers in North America.

The pandemic pushed millions of new campers outside, and the pull of the outdoors continues to bring them back.

Here are some fast facts from the report:

  • There were 93.8 million active camper households in the US in 2021
  • There were 56.9 million households who camped at least once in 2021
  • There were 9.1 million first-time camper households last year

The North American Camping Report is an independent annual study of North American camper habits and desires conducted by KOA and Cairn Consulting.

While camping was already growing steadily year-over-year pre-pandemic, the pandemic dramatically impacted camping and outdoor recreation in the last two years. Camping and glamping are becoming a part of travel culture at a faster pace.

The results are used to guide KOA’s PR and marketing efforts and shared with the outdoor industry to increase the sector’s impact on campers’ lives.
